Yesterday BBC 6 accidentally let slip that “Apple is set to unveil a new video iPod at the BBC Television Centre in London on October the 12th,” and that the company is “expected to reveal details of the new MP3 and video player as well as video bundles to be available from the company’s iTunes stores.” How very interesting. Personally I don’t think Apple will release a video iPod. Although the market really wants one I don’t think they will be releasing anything yet and what the BBC said may just be hat they are expecting. Steve Jobs has said many times that he thinks people don’t want one and, although this is incorrect, I don’t think that Apple are yet ready to release such a device. If it happens I am sure it will be a fantastic product that will have great success. There is a link to where you can listen to what the BBC said using your own ears
The above image is from a selection of user created mockups of what the iPod video may look like. I think the one above is actually quite professionally created to look like an Apple advert although the device looks a bit weird. I don’t really think it will be called an iPod Movie, more likely an iPod Video. You can find more mockups on an Engadget post.
UPDATE: “Since coming forward with information concerning Apple’s anticipated announcements next week, sources have clarified that while the October 12 event will not deliver a video iPod, a lesser update to the full-size iPod will arrive alongside the new Pro Macs.” Think Secret Article. So it looks like Apple won’t be releasing a video iPod, just as I thought (though they still could surpise everyone). I don’t see why they are updating the iPods for. They are fine; I think they have done too many iPod updates this year, with the release of all iPods now colour, no iPod mini, the new iPod nano. But if they do update it I would wonder what they are updating?
