Useful OS X Keyboard Shortcuts

Command, Option and Ctrl Keys

This has quite a number of keyboard shorcuts that I never new about in OS X. A very helpfull shortcut is Cmd – Opt – D to show and hide the dock when you need to use apps that take up a lot of screen real estate. A few ones to add to the list which I use frequently are:

  • Cmd – Down Arrow – In Finder it takes you to the directory above
  • Cmd – Q – Quit Application
  • Cmd – Backspace – Delete a file
  • Shift – Cmd – Z – Redo (In Window Ctr – Y is redo and I’ve found myself pressing Cmd – Y on my Mac, but it never worked)
  • Cmd – N – New Window (In most applications such as Finder, Safari, Firefox etc)

As a general rule, if you are a switcher from PC to Mac and use some of the same programs (such as Firefox, Word etc) and have learnt some shortcuts, instead of using Ctrl – *Button* try Cmd – *Button*. Most of the time the companies retain their shorcuts and are nearly the same except the Ctrl is replaced by Cmd (which is also known as the Apple key).
