Sony on track to double PSP sales

Though the games have been few and far between lately, Sony’s PSP may be on track to sell 6 million units in North America by year’s end. From the article: “Sony Computer Entertainment America President and Chief Executive Kaz Hirai told Reuters in October the company’s goal is to double its install base by selling between 2.5 million and 3 million additional PSPs in North America by year end.” In October, the PSP had already sold an estimated 2.5 million units so far in North America. 3.5 during the holiday season may be a tall order, but we should know in a few more months whether Kutaragi & Co. hit the mark. IE for Mac Abandoned

IE moving to trash

It looks like Microsoft has officially abadoned the IE for Mac project. It’s not like they have done anything to it recently, but it is now official. But, who cares? I don’t think anyone is using IE for Mac. It’s UI is horrible, compatibility, CSS and everything else about it is old. I didn’t even have IE on my Mac, only reason I downloaded it once was to see a bug that MS had on MSN.com which made IE crash and I forgot to remove it until now!

On a broader note, this means that fewer sites can justify having IE only versions of their sites. They cannot say, “Well, get IE for Mac and it should work.” No. Start clean-coding your sites for Firefox and Safari compatibility or lose 6 percent (and growing) of your customers. [TUAW]

Yep, it is true and even Microsoft say on their site to “migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple’s Safari” but it is not like anyone would use IE for Mac. Safari is great and I love it, but personally I prefer FF1.5 because of the extensions and the other stuff. But Safari is a solid browser and it is great, much better than the IE 6 that MS pulled out of the trash can.

More Best Buy shopping nightmares

Looks like Best Buy flubbed the Xbox 360 event that they held over the weekend. Mistakes made, according to anecdotal evidence shared by people who were there.

  • Perhaps the biggest mistake was Best Buy’s decision to stockpile all of the Xbox 360s that they get in over the last week or more in order to have a big re-launch event that they could heavily promote. The stores would have easily sold any replenishment stock without a promotion, so why do it?

Image reflection in Firefox 1.5 with Javascript and Canvas tag

Reflection Screenshot

Using a small javascript and the canvas tag in Firefox 1.5 (and Opera 9-Beta but no Safari 2 or DeerPark) this cool script allows you to reflect an image and have it fad away. It looks really cool, but sadly it doesn’t work in IE, Safari and some other browsers. It only works in Firefox 1.5 and Opera 9 Beta. That means the small minority of people who use it can take advantage of the special tag in FF, otherwise it doesn’t display at all. But it is nice to see something like this though. I don’t like Opera, it doesn’t really have a good design and is quite memory intensive. If you want to try it out, make sure you are using FF (get it here) or Opera and click the link below.

Decoding The Da Vinci Code Movie Website

Fans of the Da Vinci Code book and those who can’t wait for the movie to be out next year should check out the official website to look for hidden images, numbers and words in the site’s flash introducion. In all, I found seven such clues. The flash moves very fast so use the pause, reverse and forward buttons to slowly look out for the following.

Purple frog found in India

Purple Frog

A new species of frog has been discovered in India. The amphibian is plump, purple, and its ancestors probably lived among dinosaurs 175 million years ago, according to DNA analyses. Two scientists, S.D. Biju of India, and Franky Bossuyt of Belgium, found the frog in the Western Ghats Mountains of Southern India. The new species, named Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, belongs to an entirely new family of frogs.
The frog’s closest relatives live 1,800 miles away on the islands of Seychelles, near Madagascar. So how did the species travel from Africa to India?

I have created a category, in which I will post mostly non-tech related stuff, but things that won’t be in much detail, and will include a link to the article. This way I can add more posts to the blog.

Best Buy offering Spyware installation for $129

Screenshot from Best Buy Canada

It looks like that Best Buy Canada is offering Spyware Installation for $129 (Canadian). It’s obviously a typo error, because when you click on a link, it gives you information about Best Buy setting up an anti-spyware software for your system. It’s a bit pricy really, any tech savvy person could do it in ten minutes. This is just another way of Best Buy crossing the line. The advert is 8th down the list on the page.

Leave it to Google…

Google Search Result

… to have “the answer to life the universe and everything“. I didn’t understand why it was 42, but after some researching I found that it was reffering to the book ‘A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ by Douglas Adams.

According to the Hitchhiker’s Guide, researchers from a pan-dimensional, hyper-intelligent race of beings, construct Deep Thought, the second greatest computer of all time and space, to calculate the Ultimate Answer. After seven and a half million years of pondering the question, Deep Thought provides the answer: “forty-two.”
“Forty-two!” yelled Loonquawl. “Is that all you’ve got to show for seven and a half million years’ work?” “I checked it very thoroughly,” said the computer, “and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you’ve never actually known what the question is.” [From Wikipedia]

So Google knows all, I wonder what else it knows? Though this is quite old, I ‘refound’ it and thought it was quite interesting how Google includes these nice things. That’s what makes it special. There must be some other things like this inside Google’s calculator. Now to try and find out…

Get Firefox NOW

I hate to be the person that moans (honestly), but from my website admin panel I can see that 84.9% of my visitors use IE (see image below). I don’t like that. Not only does IE not like some parts of my site, so it displays it incorrectly, but it has huge gaping holes that are a huge security risk! So if you haven’t got it already then get Firefox, please? It is for your benefit so that your computer doesn’t start crawling with viruses and worms, and no not the live ones! ;)

So click the link above to help support the site as well as making your internet browsing safer.
