TIP: Having Xbox Live connection problems?
Published January 3rd, 2006 in Gaming, Internet, Microsoft, Technology
I saw this on Xbox 360 Fanboy earlier today. If you have an Xbox 360 go into your System blade -> Network Settings -> Test Xbox Live Connection. Leave that to run and once it’s finished have a look at what the NAT (Network Address Translation) says. If it’s Moderate or Strict (like mine above) then you will only be able to connect to certain other users. To fix this make the following ports open on your router to set the NAT to open: 88 (UDP), 3074 (UDP), and 3074 (TCP).
I haven’t tried opening the ports yet, but you can see from the image above that my NAT is Moderate, so that’s why I have been having trouble connecting to people when playing Halo 2!

iam trying to connect to xbox live my isp is aol and i have a thompson speedtouch 576 wireless modem router which is connected to my pc with a ethernet cable into the network card in my pc, i have the wireless network adapter on the back of my console, when i select test media on the xbox it connects ok but it fails the ip address. is that because the network card and the router have different ip adresses????
the test media connection is for testing your connection if you are using the media sharing program from microsoft (enables you to share music and photos with the 360). the IP addresses should be different
I had the same problem but i found that if you go on
http://speedtouch.lan
this will take you to your routers settings menu.
If you click on home network at the bottom of the menu on the left hand side.
Click on your xbox 360
(something like ‘Unknown-00-12-5a-4f-fd-4a)
Then atn the bottom of the screen click ‘assign the public ip address of a connection to a device’.
After i did this my xbox 360 said the NAT was open.
Because both of you have speedtouch’s it should be fine, however this could vary between models and the setting you have applied. a good place to look on how to change your settings is: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
Hi all, I am not a gamer but am now putting my feet into the water into pc games. My maxonline contract is expiring soon and now pondering on taking up the Xbox 360 core promo fm Starhub. But from what I’ve read in the net, lots of people are saying “stay off the core bundle cos its gonna cost you more money buying the accessories..”
One question here..is this Starhub xbox 360 promo designed to squeeze more money out of their customers by offering something less worth the taking?
Second question.. any diff between Xbox and pc games ? Fm what I’ve seen, pc game is more economic than xbox… can anyone comment??
1Q: Sadly yes, that’s why Microsoft made the bundle. All in all it’s 100% worth the money for the premium bundle. For the core bundle you’ll need to buy a memory card if you wish to actually save games (15-20 bucks) and then if you wish to use Xbox Live you’ll have to buy the headset and it’s not worth it really. If you really cant spare the cash then buy the core, otherwise the premium bundle is the best.
2Q: Xbox 360 games are far more detailed and graphically better than pc games. no matter what any die hard enthusiast may tell you, the graphics are better. But everyone has their styles, and some may prefer teh keyboard and mouse combo over the controller. Games are pretty similar in a way as their pc counterparts have probbaly the same maps, levels etc. I prefer games consoles to PC’s, because there is no need to maintain the system. it has the latest graphics and hardware parts that you can get (well you cant get it, its made specially for the 360). You may have to spend a good amount of money for a high end graphics card that will likely cost around half the price of the 360, if not more. The 360 does consume a lot of power, but then you aren’t uding it 24/7 are you?
So really it depends on what you prefer, and what you’d pay and whether you’d want to spend money on graphics card quite often to play the latest games.
check out http://www.portforward.com/ - they have lots of guides availabile for all kinds of different routers.
Hey I also have a question, I am trying to use my Wireless adapter (Speadtouch 121g) To connect but when trying to use the ‘Windows Connect Now’ to add this adapter to my network, the xbox cannot find it? IS there any way i can get some driver or utility’s that config the adapter on the PC for use in the Xbox?
I have the speed touch 576 rooter too, i have used portforward.com but it doesnt seem to help. it might be that the last paragraph doesnt tell you what to do to the “device”
“Use the Device box to choose a computer to forward ports to. This box contains a list of computer names that are visible on your network. Select the application you created using the Game or Application drop down box. Then click Add to enable it.
And that is it! You are done! ”
can anyone help?
Thanks
You need to go to the local IP of your modem/router (whatever you use). Normally this will be something like 10.0.1.1 or 192.168.1.1.
What it means by the device box, is an actual box on the page which lists the computers that are connected to the router/modem.You then click the name that your 360 has (whatever that may be) and click on add.
I’m sorry if this wasn’t much help, but I don’t have the speedtouch router. Hope it helped though!
