Need For Speed Most Wanted blamed for car crash

Canadian media outlets have jumped all over the tragic death of Tahir Khan, a taxi driver who was killed when an 18-year-old, racing his parents’ Mercedes, collided into Khan’s vehicle. The other teen involved in the street race initially fled the scene, but later returned. Police later found a copy of Need For Speed Most Wanted on the front seat of one of the vehicles involved in the grim incident.
Both teens have been charged with criminal negligence causing death and face maximum sentences of life in prison. As has been the case in the past, the media has suggested video games, specifically NFSMW, as a motive for the deadly crime. [Joystiq]

I think that the game may have had an influence on the teen’s driving, however since he/she is 18 I think they would have had enough inteligence not to do such thing purely just from the game. Unless he/she was off his/her face then they would have enough control over themselves to stop it. But because this has happened the media will overcover this and make a bigger deal out of it trying to blame the whole thing on the game.
As a side note I have this game for Xbox 360 and it rocks! It does have high speed car chases and crashing, on and off road, but I am 15 and I didn’t get the ‘message’ that they say these types of games have. I sure as hell wouldn’t even think of trying anything near to it. Even though the game’s graphics are extremely realistic I can still tell that I’m staring at a TV.

Google Date

Google Date lets you enter a date and then searches using Google for what happened on that date and shows three results. Since Google isn’t very good at sorting documents for relevance when it comes to dates, it usually doesn’t give you a list of big events, but of the things happening in the lives of random people.

Random Live Webcams

These webcams were found automatically through a variety of clever search techniques. Their owners might or might not have intended for them to be public. But they obviously are. Many of them are security cameras in companies or semi-public places. If you hover over the picture you’ll see what location information is available. If you click on it, a window will open and you can see a live video feed, plus comments and ratings and other information.
1343 webcams are available as of last scan.

Nintendo DS Lite Announced

Looks like the rumour turned out to be true. And I am glad! I swear I may just buy one if the price is a little bit cheaper than it is right now as I already have a PSP and a 360. Not much information yet but here is what was announced.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata today announced Nintendo DS Lite, a slimmer version of the best-selling Nintendo DS™. Also featuring brighter screens, Nintendo DS Lite will launch in Japan in March. Nintendo DS Lite will be less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter.
Nintendo DS has enjoyed extremely strong sales in Japan and around the world, selling more than 14.4 million units worldwide. The Japanese sell-through of the existing Nintendo DS hardware exceeded 5 million within 13 months, which made Nintendo DS the fastest-selling video game system there.
Nintendo will announce more information about the availability of Nintendo DS Lite in North America and other territories in the future.

[Thanks Joystiq for the speech]

The Nintendo DS Lite is smaller and lighter than the DS. It is 1/3rd smaller and 20-percent of the weight of the original DS. It will apparently be released on March 2nd for ¥16,800 (~£74.32). I sthink we (the UK) will still get the short end of the stick and have to wait longer than everyone else and pay more. It really is unfair. “It’s important to remember, however, that the DS Lite we see here may not be the device that you actually buy, being that these are still considered to be design mock-ups.” They still look good though, but I hoped that it would be at least a little bit different than the original DS.

Xbox 360 Dashboard and Game Updates ‘Coming Soon’

An inside source at Microsoft informed us that Microsoft is currently finishing off one huge update for the Xbox 360 that is going to put an end to all the common problems in both games and the system itself. It will contain fixes for all currently known lockups in games, missing or impossible to get achievements and a bunch of new functionality in the Dashboard. The update package will be released as soon as possible via a central dashboard update. The webcam accessory is going to be released simultaneously or slightly after, because one of the Dashboard modifications is going to be camera support. Whether background downloading is another is not known yet.
Xbox MVP and forum moderator Shreddies more or less confirms the information for all you skeptics out there.

Happy Birthday Mac!

Yesterday, 20 years ago, on January 24th 1984, Apple released its first affordable Mac which had a GUI. The Mac 128k ran at a blazing 8MHz speed and came with System 1.0. It was the first ever computer to accept the new 400k 3.5″ floppy discs and was originally sold for $2495.

The cost of the Mac was a huge blow to the programmers who worked on the computer and it hampered acceptance of the machine. Not that they didn’t try to hold the cost down. Steve Jobs negotiated the price for the Motorola 68000 down to $9 per chip. High price and low power aside, January 24, 1984 was the day Apple introduced the computer that changed everything. Yet it didn’t change Apple’s penchant for pricing their computers in the stratosphere.

I know that the ‘Lisa’ was released in 1983, however that had a price of $9,995 which really isn’t affordable and was a “plunge few businesses were willing to take“. The Lisa ran its own OS and wasn’t as funky as the Mac 128k (above). There is more info about the Lisa here.

Stewie is getting his own talk show

You know Stewie, the evil and extremely smart British baby on the series Family Guy, well he is getting his own radio talk show, sort of like a podcast. It is only for the internet so I see no reason for it not to be listed in iTunes and it will start sometime this year. “‘We think that the property is perfectly suited for that audience’ Fox Interactive Media president Ross Levinsohn said Tuesday”. I think so too. There are millions of Family Guy fans out there who would love to listen to this. If it was released as a podcast, or with at least an RSS feed I most certainly would. Family Guy is great, and has that quality that the Simpsons doesn’t. They are both great shows but Family Guy is funny in its own way (and so are the Simpsons).

Inside the 5G iPod w/ Pictures

There is a Flickr user who has taken apart his/her 5G iPod and shown us the guts. Pretty cool. I can’t even believe they managed to squeeze all that stuff inside there and make the battery last so long (when playing music). You can see the forum post here. Tons of more photos on the flickr page.

Get XP running on an Intel Mac and win money

Yes it’s true.

My MacBook is shipping on the 15th of February. I told my boss that this would replace my IBM desktop and I could boot Windows XP on it. I am still confident it can be done. I am pledging $100 of my own money and offering anyone else who would like the instructions on how to Dual boot these two operating systems the ability to donate some of their money into the pot as a reward for the person / group that can make dual-booting Mac OS X and Windows XP happen on an Intel Mac. Good Luck,
Colin

The current total is $4357 at 24/01/2005 21:11 GMT. Wow, it looks like the race is on! I would try if I had some spare time and an Intel mac to use, but I have little/no knowledge of booting and this kind of stuff. It would be fun to try though. This will encourage people to try and it will probably get the installation out into the wild a lot quicker

Sub-Pixel Font Rendering

I have never heard of this technique. But it is used to make pixes look a lot sharper without changing the monitor. This is how it works: Each pixel on a display is made out of 3 smaller sub pixels with the colours red, green and blue. Each colour is then adjusted to change the colour of the pixel overall. However this technique uses the sub pixels to make the edges of the letters look sharper.
On the above image the left side shows the normal letter and how it would look. The centre image uses anti-aliasing which is a technique that blurs the edges of letter into a greyer shade so that it looks better. However anti-aliasing can make small text look small and unreadable. The right image uses the sub-pixel font rendering to make the letter clearer and smoother.

By ‘borrowing’ sub-pixels from adjacent whole pixels, we can fine-tune the placement and width of typeface features with three times more horizontal accuracy then ever before! Our eyes cooperate by seeing only black and white, since the ‘borrowed’ sub-pixels are always adjacent to their complementary color pixels, which our eyes mix to form white!

It may say that you can’t see the colours, but on a few of the images they show it can be seen, though it is not very annoying. On another image the text looks extremely clear, a lot better than the non-sub-pixel one.
