Apple mystery cube – supposedly new product?

apple mystery cube

This is what happens when Apple announces a special event. People go crazy enough that they take blurry photos of ‘the new’ product Apple will release. Here is what the alledged photographer says:

I was only able to snap one quick shot of this as I was only in there for about 30 seconds. I sort of stumbled upon it – can’t say more about how or why. I only got about half a sec to look around back – there are a bunch of ports (and maybe a button or two) neatly arranged on the back (?) of the cube in a line along the bottom edge. It’s about 8-inches square and 8-inches tall – a perfect cube. It seems to be made out of a similar material as a Power Mac – aluminum perforated with a round hole pattern, but they’re smaller holes than found on a Power Mac. The top is the same material as the sides with the addition of the Apple logo, even though it doesn’t look like it in the photo – I had to snap it quick, sorry.
I don’t have any real detail on exactly what it’s designed to do, but I know from other things I can’t mention that it’s media-related. Apple “Media Cube,” maybe? Anyway, thought you guys would be interested.

My guess? It is definitely a fake. And why do I say this, well it seems weird that Apple would make a product that is this perfectly cube, but leave its edges sharp so that you could cut yourself (think of the mac mini or the G4 cube, those were rounded). From the blurry photo it seems the leaf from the Apple is missing, and from what I can make out I think it is a photo of an Apple Design Award which has been photoshopped, which isn’t hard to do considering it is really blurry anyway. See for yourself.

Inside the MacBook Pro

macbook pro inside

Not much time after its release, someone has already taken apart the MacBook Pro, and taken some pretty good phtotos. The big hole you see in the midde is for the battery, they put it in a different place than for previous ‘Books. That’s how they managed to make it so thin! Lots of other pictures after the link.

Mockups of the Revolution’s box

revolution box mockuprevolution box mockup 2

Some people are really sad. Creating the packaging, quite good packaging to say, of a games console that hasn’t even been released yet? How much time do people have on their hands, I find that I don’t have enough time in the day to do all the stuff I want. Anyway, I think these boxes are pretty darn cool, that fanboy (or girl) sure has good designing skills. The one on the right (top) reminds me of Apple packaging. It is simple, clean and white.
There certainly seems to be a lot of Revolution buzz going around this week, more so than ever. Maybe we are closing in on the release date, or an announcement of something. Who knows? What are you upto Nitendo, what?

Detailed MacBook Pro pictures

I think the title says it all. This time it is from someone who actually bought the ‘Book first hand and is not for an Apple employee (like last time). Lots of explanation too and comparison to the 15″ PBook. It is thin!

Apple Special Event – For real this time

apple special event

So this one is no fake, it has been confirmed with Apple. Apple is planning a special event for February 28th at 10:00AM PST (6:00PM GMT). The event will be held at the Apple Town Hall on the Cupertino Campus. The invitation has a large iCal style icon with the date showing February 28th 2006, with the words above: “Come see some fun new products from Apple”.
The rumours will once again rise as everyone speculates what Apple could release. I personally think that a larger/smaller MacBook Pro could be in order and/or a Mac Mini DVR / home unit which could relate to the fun part of the message. Who knows, Apple could introduce anything and we will probably get it wrong ;)

Apple Rumour: MacBook Pro to get LCD touchpad

macbook pro lcd tochpad

This is an interesting rumour. New Tech Spy say that Apple will leap ahead with a new technology embedding an LCD into the touchpad, so that, as illustrated above, you can use it for navigation etc.

The new touch finger LCD’s will appear first on Apple’s Macbook Pro along both sides of the scrolling touchpad, as an addition to the manual numeric function keys, but will eventually replace them all together. User input will be the driving force to what happens next, as a generation of people will have to slowly adjust to the new system. History shows that change does not come easy, with less than 1% of the notebook market in 2005 being captured by tablet PC’s. It seems notebook users are very careful when adapting to new technology.

I think it seems to far ahead. It reminds me of the optimus keyboard, which is still nowhere to be found. Maybe they want to start of a new idea, but this doesn’t seem like a feasable idea, or something that Apple would do.

8 version of Vista, which will you run?

Windows Starter 2007 – Vista without Aero, probably meant for developing nations.
Windows Vista Home Basic – Basic Windows Vista for your single PC fam, doesn’t sound like much going on here. Analagous to XP Home.
Windows Vista Home Basic N – European version of the same, but without Media Player (because of antitrust rulings against MS in the EU).
Windows Vista Home Premium – This is the one we’re all probably gonna own. It’s got Media Center functionality, Cable Card support, the whole home-media shebang.
Windows Vista Business – Think of it as XP Pro, but Vista.
Windows Vista Business N – Think of it as XP Pro, but Vista, but Euro.
Windows Vista Enterprise – Business version of Vista with numerous enterprise features, like Virtual PC, volume encryption, etc.
Windows Vista Ultimate – Love that name. This one does all of the above (and more); what else do you need to know? It’s ultimate Windows. [Engadget]

The Revolution in the ‘flesh’

revolution setup

So this is a real Revolution in the flesh, eh? It isn’t a photoshop. *Cough* *Cough* It never ceases to amaze me to what lenghts people can create these. Some people think it is real, others not. Check out the debacle on the Joystiq posting here.

PS3 to cost $800, says Merrill Lynch

Sony’s albatross PlayStation 3 is going to cost them $800 per unit at launch (they list $900, but apparently Lynch financial analysts can’t add their own totals). $800 per unit? Doesn’t sound unreasonable considering what Sony’s trying to get under cram under the hood of this thing; Lynch calls it an “expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product” because of the Cell processor and Blu-ray drive, which account for the lion’s share of the backend parts costs (see above). Granted, most of this analysis comes off as estimation and prediction, but we’d like to make a prediction of our own: the PS3? She’s like Kutaragi’s Spruce Goose. Oh she’ll fly alright, but at what cost? [Engadget]

Site will go down…

…for some upgrades and maintenance. The site will go down for around 48 hours. It shouldn’t take that long, and I’m not exactly sure when, but hopefully we can be up and running by Monday. See you then!

UPDATE: We’re back up now and working. Hope it didn’t cause much inconvenience.
