May or may not do Christmas Eve/Day postings

As I am Hungarian I get to open my presents a day earlier than anyone else! So officially tomorrow is Christmas for me and if Santa thinks that I have been a good boy he might give me a 360. So if he does I will obviously be occupied for the whole day. I will be taking some photos though of my setup (as we have a Sony Bravia LCD TV) and I will post them whenever I can. I may try to use the multimedia streaming function of the 360, but it may take me a while to battle with my Windows PC that I run only when I need it to. It’s a shame Microsoft doesn’t make a version for Mac so I can stream all the cool stuff from my Mac instead of having to start up my PC and change the monitor cable (I’m don’t have much money and I really can’t be bothered to buy a KVM when the Windows PC will be moved out soon, hopefully!)

Enjoy yourselves and have Merry Christmukkakwanza and a happy new year!

New category: Shorts

I have created a category, in which I will post mostly non-tech related stuff, but things that won’t be in much detail, and will include a link to the article. This way I can add more posts to the blog.

Get Firefox NOW

I hate to be the person that moans (honestly), but from my website admin panel I can see that 84.9% of my visitors use IE (see image below). I don’t like that. Not only does IE not like some parts of my site, so it displays it incorrectly, but it has huge gaping holes that are a huge security risk! So if you haven’t got it already then get Firefox, please? It is for your benefit so that your computer doesn’t start crawling with viruses and worms, and no not the live ones! ;)

So click the link above to help support the site as well as making your internet browsing safer.

Browser Stats

Oops, RSS Feed problem now fixed

After receiving a message that my RSS feed via FeedBurner wasn’t working, I wasn’t sure what the problem was. It was because I used Explorer Destroyer to get people to switch from IE to Firefox while browsing my site. My statistics application has told me that 75.9% of people who visit my site use IE and I was merely trying to get people to switch over, as there are a few problems with IE and my site. Plus Firefox is a lot better in general. Anyway the code added screwed up WordPress’ RSS feed, which in turn made my FeedBurner feed not work. The whole thing is now resolved, and for those who are only using my RSS feed, I’ll encourage you to check out the blog from day to day if these things happen. Enjoy the content, I have some posts to do…

Mac mini server up and running

MySQL

As well as having a look at the Xbox 360 at GAME yesterday, I was looking through my Mac and remembered that it came installed with an Apache server. I was a bored so I downloaded PHP and MySQL to try and set up a local server that can run wordpress. After some hours of agonising pain and guessing it managed to work. The screenshot above shows the MySQL administration panel that I installed into my applications. I can edit users, databases and fiddle around with the settings. But I have no intention of doing that incase it ceases to work. It isn’t working exactly as I had hoped, but I can do all the things that I do on my blog that I want to.
Next thing to do is try and make it accessible via the WWW.

UPDATE: I have tried to configure my router and my Mac to let it do onto the internet. I have also set up a Dynamic DNS through DynDNS. But I’m not sure if it works since I am at home. If anyone could verify this for me by accessing it here (AND here) and post a comment on whether it succeeded or not. If it didn’t work tell me what was brought up when you clicked on the links (make sure you try both). Thanks.

No news

There is usually at least a few stories or interesting things going on but I haven’t really been able to find any news that is perticularly interesting. Lets see how things progress. BTW, I won’t be posting tomorrow as I am going to London for some Christmas shopping. A trip to Regent Street Apple Store for me!

Blog updated

Now that I have had some spare time I decided to redecorate the blog to suit Christmas which is drawing closer. I hope you like it and any feedback would be very helpful, just post a comment.

Mac Desktop - 29/11/05

Mac Desktop for Thuesday 29th November 2005. I decided to get into the holiday spirit so I now have flashing lights around my desktop and a Futurama background. The flashing lights is done by a program called MacLampsX, it’s free and you can change what lights / snow flakes / holly (isn’t that the same as mistletoe?).

Mac Mini is sick…

CarbonLib error

… or was sick. After having my mini for over 2 months this was the first problem that had arisen. It seemed that when I tried to launch Word or any Office application as well as a number of other programs they would crash for some unknown reason. The screenshot can be seen above. After googling for almost an entire night it seemed the only choice was Terminal (like MS-DOS for mac) or re-installing Tiger. I didn’t like the latter so I started with Terminal. It required delving into the unknown, which I did. Time and time again the same error would happen. So I had to reinstall Tiger. This was bad, or so I thought. It is not like Windows. There is an option called “Archive and Install” which keeps your setting and work and just reinstalls Tiger. My applications, games and work are all untouched. Continue reading ‘Mac Mini is sick…’
