If you haven’t heard of MySpace before, it is simple a website where you have your own profile and you can add friends and chat with them. The latest news has shocked a lot of people.
“About mid morning today we were able to confirm that the web site ‘MySpace-dot-com’ allowed several students to post threatening messages on it’s web site, messages threatening Warren High School,” Pascual Gonzales of the Northside School District said. “This message said two boys were planning to show up at school with guns.”
This is really amazing. I never thought that someone would use MySpace for such a thing. It scared the students so much that only 400 out of 3000 students attended school on the day. I know I wouldn’t go to this school, but no-one would dare do such thing at our school. They could make threats but they woudln’t carry them out. The students who, for legal reasons, can’t be named will “face felony charges, including making terroristic threats and disruption of a high school campus“. The school may also wants to file a lawsuit against MySpace for letting this happen.
It just seems to me that if you put up a public web site, and you allow students, teeangers, minors to post their thoughts and ideas, and not monitor it in an adult manner, you are asking for trouble,” Gonzales said. “This particular web site has been a pain for all Bexar County schools for a long time now, and it just seems that the owners of MySpace-dot-com should be held accountable.”
I understand the threats being made, but I don’t see why they would sue MySpace. With so many people signed up, it would be near impssible to monitor the content on it. But MySpace did take of the content at noon (the day the attack was suppossed to happen). MySpace just need to take it off as soon as they are alerted. If the lawyers can come up with a way to monitor the postings on MySpace quickly and easily, then the lawsuit would be fine. But there are many sites like MySpace, and it was picked because it is the most popular. A lot of people have it in my school, including me, so I can see why it was picked. It would attract the most attention, but consequently it would take longer for the ‘posting’ to be taken off.
