Diggnation Episode 12 Released

Over at Revision 3, where they created the broken, systm and now host diggnation, they have released the newest version of Diggnation. If your not familiar with Diggnation, it is a podcast where they review the top articles submitted to Digg. Digg is a social bookmarking site, where you can keep track of your friends and what articles they have been ‘digging’. It is quite hard to explain Digg, so just visit their website to see.
In the September 15 episode they discuss:

Power supply calculator, Patents on NES, Howto make people look pretty, Teen gets jail time for Paris Hilton hack, First Google site, iTunes video store, Intel’s manufacturing costs, and fish tounge.

There are many ways to download Diggnation:

Bittorrent is the best way to download, as it helps Kevin with keeping the bandwidth costs down. But if you can’t use Bittorrent then use the direct links (the latter 2).

iTunes 5 has been released

iTunes 5

With the big event in San Francisco yesterday people have been wondering what Apple was going to release. Well Steve Job’s first announcement was the release of iTunes 5. With the added redesign, which I think looks cool, they have also added a bunch of features including:

  • Windows users can sync their calendar and address book via Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express to their iPods.
  • Security feature for parents allows them to control what the children can access (ie. Block podcasts, block the iTunes Music store, block them from getting music which has explicit content in them, etc)
  • Smart Shuffle allows you to control how random shuffling is.
  • Sort your playlists into folders. This is very useful if you have lots of playlists and you want to organise them.

I think overall the new iTunes has the improvements that most people have been looking for, although it is a shame that you cannot sort all your podcasts by date. Other than that the iTunes will continue to be the worlds best music organisation and music playing software.

Podcasting

If you don’t know what podcasting is yet then there is an article at wikipedia which tells you about it. In simple terms it uses RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to broadcast an audio file. This audio file contains the ‘show’, in which people can talk about whatever they wish. I enjoy podcasting and I think it is a great way to access news and other content, without the need to read it. It also links lots of people together. With the added support for podcasting in iTunes, podcasting now reaches more people than ever and you should get into it too. You can participate by creating your own podcast, or just listening to them through an aggregator such as: iPodder, iPodderX, iTunes and many more. If you are interested in podcasts that talk about technology visit Techpodcasts.com as this is a great place which lists many technology podcasts. If you would like to create your own podcast, there are various books about it, including the very popular Podcasting: The Do It Yourself Guide by Todd Cochrane (of the Geek News Central Podcast)
I listen to many podcasts, but the ones that I listen to regularly are:
- The MacCast
- The Geek News Central Podcast
- Diggnation – The Digg Podcast
- Engadget Podcast
- WebTalkRadio
- this WEEK in Tech (TWiT)
- EverythingDigital
I hope you get into podcasting as it is very interesting and fun. You can get a great deal out of it.
